Do you use coarticulation in R therapy? If you don’t already have this strategy in your toolbox, I promise you that you’ll find it useful for almost all of your R clients!

Coarticulation is when a sound is influenced by the sounds around it. In R therapy, this is useful because we can build upon the client’s existing strengths in R production and use those strengths to elicit another type of R.

Think of coarticulation as a “word puzzle,” like the target words pictured above. If a client can say the initial R in “read” but struggles with the final AIR in “bear,” we can combine the two words to make “buried.”

The word “buried” draws upon the strengths in initial R production, using the features of that sound to help elicit the vocalic AIR sound!

That dang R. Some kids respond to the first cue you try - maybe they’re readily stimulable or already have a facilitative context.

Others aren’t so easy. And sometimes they’re not ready to jump into elicitation right away in our first few sessions (even though as SLPs it’s in our nature to want results right away).

But there are foundational R skills you can target before elicitation, like:
✔️ rapport
✔️ growth mindset
✔️ auditory discrimination of W-R-L
✔️ gliding minimal pairs
✔️ phonological awareness
✔️ auditory perception training
✔️ anatomy
✔️ tongue movement

If you work with speech sound clients on clusters or blends, you may notice sometimes the child putting a schwa sound (“uh”) between the first and second consonant. So glue could sound like “guh-lue,” or “puh-lay” for play.

One way to work on this in the initial stages is AVOID stop consonants like /p, k/ and instead try continuous sounds like /s, f/. For voiceless stops, there is already a slight burst of air upon release (which could enhance the schwa insertion). But using a fricative sound like S, F allows the airflow to be continuous between sounds rather than stopped.

I’m on a huge “R” kick and I’m not sorry 🤪 today let’s chat HOW you can eliminate lip-rounding when clients are gliding (or substituting W for R).

This friend is now able to differentiate between W and R words in minimal pairs, BUT he is still inserting that W sound after his R. Initially I accepted these productions because he was making successive approximations towards R and producing contrasts.

But now let’s eliminate that lip-rounding completely, if possible. To do that, I tried the following:

1️⃣ used the word “run,” where the vowel is low and neutral, so no lip movement should be involved at all (and there is a slight dropping of the jaw)
2️⃣ explicitly talking about how we don’t need our lips to say “run,” just our tongue
3️⃣ using slow, simultaneous productions with visual attention to my face
4️⃣ specific feedback when accurate AND when erred

I think we were pretty successful! What else would you do to eliminate lip-rounding? 😌
