I attended my very first marketing event this week I attended my very first marketing event this weekend for my private practice, Play on Words Speech Therapy! I was invited to set up a booth for a grand opening event for a new local private school. I spent the day playing Banana Blast with kids, handing out prizes, and chatting with local families about my services.

Words cannot describe how PROUD I am of myself for starting a private practice. This has been a career goal and dream of mine for a long time, and to see it take fruition and begin to grow is an amazing feeling. It pushes me far out of my comfort zone, but I know it’s all worth it. I can’t wait to see what happens next for this little business and the impact it makes on my community. ❤️

Comment CONTEXT to be sent the link to my R Sound Comment CONTEXT to be sent the link to my R Sound Facilitative Contexts packet! 🎉

🚨 If you haven’t jumped on the “facilitative contexts” bandwagon yet, I need you to right now! 😁 They can be a great way to experience early success in R therapy.

Have you ever noticed where there may be a “magic word” where your R client says the sound better than in other words? Maybe they can see the R better in the words “green” or “truck,” but you’re not sure why.

Facilitative contexts are these words where the R may sound better because of the sounds around it. These could be consonants or vowels!

My favorite facilitative contexts for R are:
▪️ Velars
▪️ Low vowels
▪️ Alveolars

If you’ve noticed this about your R clients and you want a TON of activities to target this, you’ve got to try my R Sound Facilitative Contexts Packet! 😌 It includes 7 different contexts with over 10 no-prep activities per context.

My favorite part? Activities can be used with readers and non-readers!

💬 Speech Sound Trick: Backwards Chaining My st 💬 Speech Sound Trick: Backwards Chaining

My student was struggling with the medial /l/ word “swallow” as we played a game, but he has a strong initial /l/. Using backwards chaining, I built up success by practicing the 2nd syllable of the word “low” first. We practiced that and then chained it back into the whole word “swallow,” and he got it! 😁

Have you tried backwards chaining before?

If your client has a STRONG initial ‘r’ but st If your client has a STRONG initial ‘r’ but struggles with vocalic /er/ like a student I had this week, try using coarticulation!

I love starting with “her” with initial ‘r’ words, like “her + red” because the glottal /h/ is so neutral. We stretch out the ‘r’ between the two words, using the successful initial position to elicit the final /er/.

Then I gradually increase the speed between the two words, then progress to adding a pause, then I get rid of the initial ‘r’ word to practice “her” only.

Then we can add other consonants, like “per, cher, grr.” Let me know if you try this tip 😌

Comment “LATERAL” for a lateral lisp freebie, Comment “LATERAL” for a lateral lisp freebie, then SAVE this post for reference for your next lateral lisp client!

A lateral lisp is where the air for sounds such as /s, z, sh, ch, dj/ comes out laterally, or through the sides, rather than the center. It may sound “slushy.” It is NOT a typical error in development, and children will likely require speech therapy to remediate it.

My 3 favorite tricks and tips when treating a lateral lisp (particularly on the /s/ sound) are:
1️⃣ Using phonetic shaping from a /t/
2️⃣ Using high, front facilitative vowels
3️⃣ Using coarticulation to elicit an initial /s/ - like combining “eats-see.”

I have a FREEBIE for you that targets this skill! Comment LATERAL and I’ll send it your way 🎉
